“A long time ago, in a far away land, on a dark and stormy night, a new idea was conceived. With the coming of the dawn, a bright new day revealed said concept. Behold...what was brought forth upon that morn has now become that which we know, see, and perceive to be The ArtSplot...and it has blossomed...and this is good.”

We had a great summer and we hope you did too. Plenty of sunshine and ice cream, a few hot days, not too dry, some quiet moments, and much creativity, awareness, and appreciation. During our fifth year of ArtSplot Summer Art Enrichment Programs we served over two hundred and forty students ages six to seventeen during ten weeks from June 10th to August 22nd. These included our regular Monday through Thursday sessions, two separate week long ‘Canvass Montana’ Bob Marshall Wilderness programs for high school age young adults, two separate week long ‘Natural Footsteps’ programs for middle school age youths, an outreach program with the Gateway Youth Group in Gallatin Gateway, and a three day program for Mammoth, Yellowstone National Park resident children. Art Walks in the City, a five day artistic outing to Seattle, was offered for the first time.

Activities included palette knife paintings with acrylic on boards, monotype prints using the press, sketches of wildflowers, goats, and Higgins the Pug, pastels of old buildings, victorian homes, sunflowers and waterfalls, ink drawings of varieties of trees, watercolors of mountain streams, relief printmaking with balsa wood, ceramic genie bottles and sushi trays. Our young artists posed for each other while figure drawing, visited the sale barn to draw cattle and bulls being auctioned off, and critiqued artwork in Main Street art galleries. We visited The Spanish Peaks, Hyalite Lake, Grotto Falls, The Bridgers, Cottonwood Canyon, and Story Hills. We were snowed on near Lone Peak, had water fights to cool us off, found an old anchor in Hyalite Reservoir, and saw a black bear near Brackett Creek. A few band aids were used and paint clothes established. Look for ArtSplot t-shirts and very stylish berets being worn around town. Quotes of the summer...“Mom, it’s about more than art. It’s about friends and being outside and...” Another quote...“You guys make us work hard on our art!” Yet another...“We did really cool art today...and got to walk in the stream.”

A bit about our instructors...Sean Faris lead all four ‘Canvass Montana’ (“The Bob”) and “Natural Footsteps” Programs (who else?! I ask you) and taught every other week as well. Maja Feldman and Tim Rooney taught regularly every week of the Monday though Thursday programs with intermittent assistance from Rebecca Hollewijn (who participated in “Canvass Montana” for the second year) and Molly McWalters. Chelsea Smith taught the Gateway Youth Group and Mammoth outreach programs and every other week of the summer as well. Visiting ArtSplot printmaker/instructor Jen Ryan accompanied Sean on one “Bob” trip while Maja helped out on the other one. Peter Ore assisted Sean with the “Footsteps” programs and Rolland Smith went to Yellowstone with Chelsea.

With the start of another school year The ArtSplot is in its seventh year of offering after school individualized art lessons in drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery and sculpture to students of all ages. The scheduling is flexible with each student. We will also be teaching on a regular basis at Whittier, The Carden School, and Irving. An Artist-in-Residency with Monforton School focusing on drawing and ceramic tiles for a beautification project is scheduled for September in to October. We begin a residency with Longfellow School in November to be continued in January. Other projects and programs are in the wind.
