“A long, long time ago, in a far, far away land, on a dark and stormy night, a new idea was first conceived. With the coming of the dawn, a bright new day revealed said concept. Behold...what was brought forth upon that morn has now become that which we look, see, and perceive to be The ArtSplot...and it has blossomed...and that is good.”

The ArtSplot studio is both an active workshop and a gallery. It offers art instruction as well as free-lance artwork. A wide variety of programs are available ranging from flexible individualized lessons, small group focused programs and on-site painting hikes, to artist-in-residency offerings in the schools. Instruction covers a comprehensive gambit of artistic endeavor, including drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery, and sculpture. Creative writing, literature, and music are often incorporated. Artwork in the out-of-doors is an overwhelming theme.

The ArtSplot continues to be increasingly popular.Thank you to all of you who propagate the arts in this vital community. Your place in this development is invaluable.

This past summer the ArtSplot’s week long summer programs enjoyed the company of over seventy young artists. We look forward to expanding our offerings next summer. One of the main highlights were regular trips to the sale barn to sketch cattle while they were being auctioned off. The ArtSplot Van frequented parks and trailheads. Due to the continued growth of our programs we have been able to incorporate associate and assistant instructors. They are of noteworthy caliber. Hats off to these terrific people. Jen Ryan joined the ArtSplot for all six summer sessions. She is an art major at MSU focusing on relief printmaking. Jen’s talents, tranquility, humor, and warmth are still being appreciated during specially arranged printmaking programs. If this interests you please contact us. Another engaging educator, Nicole Quinn Strand, brings occasional assistance to the studio. A recent graduate from MSU in Education, Nicole is now working with youngsters at Whittier Elementary School. Ryan Lavelle, a gifted artist/art major who taught artist-in-residency programs with the ArtSplot last year, is studying in England this year. Elise Pinkerton, also a recent MSU graduate, has classroom and outdoor education experience. She was a valuable assistant for the spring Manhattan School Drawing Residency, along with Jen and Sean.

Sean Faris. This extraordinary individual has devoted three years of artistic and instructional contributions to the ArtSplot. These include a great variety of educational settings such as week long residencies in Yellowstone Park at the school in Mammoth, to the ever popular after school individualized art lessons in the studio, not to mention the unique ‘In the Field’ Saturday Art Hikes that allow us to respond artistically first hand to our surrounding landscape. Just look at the pastel grasses drawn by a seven year old after trekking through them and rolling in them. Ponder the painting by a fifteen year old of shallow August waters in The Gallatin flowing over smooth river rocks created after the artist had waded in and crossed that river a dozen times. These experiences speak for themselves. The artwork that expresses these times and places speaks even clearer. A recent graduate here, Sean has joined the ArtSplot as full-time associate. This Fall the ArtSplot completed an outdoor Springhill Community School Artist-In-Residency Program and a quite lengthy Longfellow School Artist-In-Residency. We are working regularly with The Bozeman Academy students...a private Carden School headed by Peter Scherfig...and teach every Wednesday at Whittier Elementary School. The studio is busy every Monday through Thursday after school with students of all ages creating together. Thursday evenings are for printmaking and Monday mornings are adult. The ArtSplot was a happening place on PIR No School Days. Locations for the autumn ‘In the Fields’ included The Spanish Peaks, Big Sky, The Bridgers, and The Gallatin River. We had gorgeous weather...even with the snow in The Bridgers. Please visit our web-site. www.artsplot.comm. Visit it frequently for updated information, to email us, for registration forms, etc.. My older son created it and maintains it...expect lapses...he is our thirteen year old nutty professor. Or telephone Chelsea Smith at 587-8424. Look for these upcoming programs.
